The history of Mykonos Desert Suites is connected to Lawrence “Larry” Sofonio, whose life began in Zadar, Croatia, along the Mediterranean coast of the Adriatic Sea. After World War II, his family fled Yugoslavia and came to North America with very little, beginning a new life built on hard work, faith, and perseverance.
That Mediterranean beginning gives the property’s story a deeper meaning — a connection between coastal European roots and the warm, welcoming spirit of Palm Springs.
Larry’s life was marked by determination. He built his first home for his parents in 1955, continued his education, became a CPA, and later began investing in real estate. In 1971, he moved to the greater Palm Springs area, where he purchased apartment buildings and two hotels.
He believed in honest work, generosity, and the American dream. More than that, he understood that hospitality was ultimately about people — creating places where others could feel cared for, welcomed, and supported.
Today, Mykonos Desert Suites is entering a new chapter. The property is being reimagined as a clean, comfortable, Mediterranean-inspired suite hotel designed for the way guests travel now.
With spacious rooms, kitchens in every room, rare one-bedroom layouts, sofa beds in select suites, high-occupancy options, pool and jacuzzi spaces, and outdoor areas for gathering, Mykonos is being renewed with a clear purpose: to offer Palm Springs guests more room, more comfort, and a better stay experience.
As we move the property forward, we want to honor the story that came before us. Our goal is not to erase the past, but to build on it — with warm hospitality, strong service, thoughtful improvements, and a renewed commitment to making Mykonos Desert Suites a place guests are excited to return to.
